FREE Color By Code

 Planning for Groundhog Day? How about a FREE Color By Code?

 This one practices addition and subtraction within 20. 

 I wanted to make it more colorful but I am one of those people that sticks to reality. I was the child who never colored purple horses, etc. It is the rule follower in me, I guess. I wanted to use tan or different shades of brown at least but I figured most students have the Crayola box of 24 and guess what? Only one shade of brown and no tan. Boring. Next time, I am determined to get colorful!

Groundhog Facts FREEBIE

Do you a favorite Groundhog Day nonfiction book you like to read? My favorite is by Gail Gibbons. I love all her books. 

I record facts on an anchor chart and then have the students pick their favorites to add to their own graphic organizer in preparation for doing some informative writing. 

I am currently obsessed with the adorable clip art from Creating4 the Classroom so I made a new cuter graphic organizer that I am sharing with you for FREE!

100th Day, Freebies and a Sale!

Did you have celebrate 100th Day yet? My new school is departmentalized so I am still getting used to the changes this means for me. I miss teaching math and was a little sad to not be part of most of the 100th Day fun. Since I teach Language Arts, I was still able to do my favorite 100 Year Old writing that I have posted about before. Here a few shots the cuties made this year.

Paper from Teacher Bits and Bobs

Finally, I have decided to throw a Superbowl sale today in my TpT store since I bet many of us will have our laptops out during the game. I watch the commercials more than the game to be honest.

It is getting harder to keep up with blogging, especially if you wonder if anyone is reading anymore. The comments seem to be less these days. Maybe the traffic is all over at Facebook?

FREE Groundhog pattern

We did not finish this today but I wanted to get this out in case you could use it this year. I was inspired by the big-eyed Scrappin Doodle clipart to make a groundhog peekover.

Today we read a Gail Gibbons book to learn about groundhogs. Before we read, we recorded our schema on a circle map. After we read, we crossed out anything that was a misconception and then added new learning in a different color. Not pretty but this is what my charts look like if I do them on the spot with the kids. This my attempt to combine the Debbie Miller chart I did last year with my new dedication to thinking maps.

I was hoping to have the kids write a paragraph about the new facts they learned but with a field trip this week and their less than stellar behavior, it may not happen. We'll see if my blood pressure can take it. Hence the shorter Phil response paper you see above in the sample.

Off to bring one son to basketball and help the other write 10 metaphors (really?) so I gotta run. Hope you can use the pattern.
Groundhog Pattern

Groundhogs have bathrooms?

I forgot to post about our groundhog activities! It was a little overshadowed {get it?  HA HA. oh my, I am turning into my mother} by being the same as 100th day for us.

We read a great book by Gail Gibbons and made this chart of our learning. I had a mom tell me she couldn't believe how many facts her son came home talking about. The kids favorite was the fact that groundhogs make bathrooms in their burrows. Gotta love potty talk.

 I love that some of the kids are using the word schema on their own!! :-)

Then we made our TLC groundhogs. I see a big improvement in my kids cutting skills and I know it is from these projects. You are welcome upper grade teachers.

Groundhog Contraction Coloring

I should be grading or cleaning up my house but instead I am on the computer instead...big surprise! My students need more practice with contractions so I made this so they won't even know they are reviewing! Click the top right corner below to download.

Groundhog making words

Here is a Groundhog making words activity I made. I usually put these out as an early finisher activity and challenge the students to see who can fill it. Occasionally I'll announce, "Oh, WOW, I see Caden has 12 already..." and that really spurs them on. ;-) The letters on the bottom can be cut out and manipulated.
