My Poor, Poor Kitty

After our elation of Shadow's return wore off, we realized here wound was worse than we thought.
It was hard to get a picture but it looked like a chunk was missing so we figured it was an open bite and could get infected.

After an hour and $200 spent at the vet, I now have a completely traumatized cat. They had to shave around her wound and clean it out.

After reading about Kristin's problems getting her dog to take his meds we opted for the antibiotic by shot. They had to put a cone on her to keep her from licking her injury.

When we got home, she jumped out of the carrier and completely went nuts! She started running around the halls, bumping into walls and trying to get under beds. The poor thing is so hating that cone! She finally made it under the couch and wouldn't come out all night. She didn't eat and I couldn't give her any pain meds.

I finally coaxed her out this morning with food. I held the bowl to make sure she could get to it.
Before I could try to get any pain meds into her she freaked out again. When she tries to run down the hall I think the cone must knock on the floor and that makes her skittish. She always did freak out at the sound of plastic bags so I'm sure being surrounded by a plastic cone is torture.

Luckily she couldn't make it under my son's bed when she freaked out today and I got her to stay on it (that is the first picture above.) Even though she looks a little uncomfortable with her head off the bed it has to be better than it being wedged under the couch, barely able to move.

I want to give her pain meds (liquid) but she won't open her mouth and I don't want to force it and have her freak out again. Maybe in a little while I can bring the food bowl back and sneak the dropper in her mouth then.  Or I could be a total wimp and wait until my husband comes home and let him try. What do you think?
Thank goodness we opted for the antibiotic shot so I didn't have to deal with that, too!

  1. I'm so sorry about your kitty! I have 2 sweet ones myself and had to inject one of them with IVs last year so I have some advice. Take your baby to a place where she feels safe and swaddle her in a towel or blanket so she can't run off. Put her in your lap, and have the dropper ready to go. Wrap one arm around her and gently pry her jaws apart. With your other hand, shoot the meds into the side of her mouth so it goes down her throat. Do it all at once if you can. Don't shoot it into the middle of her mouth or she'll probably gag. Then, pet her and pet her, take her swaddle off and pet her again. Then let her run off to wherever she wants to go. Good Luck!!

  4. I hope she feels better! I have to kitties and I know how it feels when they are hurting. When I had to give one of my cats liquid medicine I often mixed it in with her wet food. She never knew the difference. :) Hope it works!

  5. My heart hurts for Shadow. When my cat had his eye removed, he had to wear a cone but it was a soft cone (not sure how to describe it), so it didn't make noise. He was a kitten so I'm not sure if they use a different type of cone for kittens than cats, but maybe that would help. She made it home, so she'll pull through!

  6. Your poor kitty! My Himalayan had the same type of wound and ended up with a cone, also. However, our vet used a cone made of fabric (stiff, but soft) that tied on. Maybe you could go back to the vet and ask for one after you tell them how she is freaking out all the time about the noise the cone makes... Maybe they have one that will work better for her. Keep your chin up! It's hard when your "babies" are hurting!

  7. i have two precious kitties too. I know at the pet stores they usually sell soft cones so you might look there. I think liquid meds are hard because they can sometimes make them foam at the mouth because of the bad taste. The most successful way I have found is to put my cat in the sink and quickly squirt the liquid in the side of his mouth. The reason I use the sink is they cant get away as quickly.

  10. So sorry about your cat! I had to give one of my cats liquid meds all the time and I finally figured out that if I "scruff" him (which is natural for them from their mama) I could put the dropper right in the side of his mouth and had no problems then. No trauma for him either! Hope it gets easier for you! :)
