Happy Seuss Day!

You know how when you are in charge of something you don't get a chance to take pictures? That was me today for our Seuss Day. Luckily some of my fellow teachers were more on the ball. They even took one of me.

We passed out hats to every student as they arrived. This shot is them watching a BrainPopJr video about Theodore Geisel in morning assembly.

Then we sang songs they learned in music class from the musical Seussical. The backdrop was also from that show.

One class performed a Lorax skit.

Our art teacher made cute boards the students could take their picture with at lunch.

The teachers all had hats, too!

After reading Oh, the Places You'll Go my second graders made the craft I posted about the other day.

"I am going to be an inventor. I am going to make a space probe and send it to pluto."

"I will be a gastroenterologist because my dad is a gastroenterologist."

"I will attend Foothill College and I will serve in the army."

I found this one interesting since both his parents are doctors and I suspect their plans won't include community college or enlisting. ;-)

"I will become a Language Arts  teacher. I will teach second grade."

This one made me smile because this is my Mini-Me. I have had the pleasure of teaching her for a year and a half now and I taught her mom years ago (she was in junior high though!) 

We also read Seuss books to one of the kinder classes. They were so cute!

A New Book Club Packet and a FREEBIE for March 2nd.

I have a new book club 2 pack for The Flying Horse: The Story of Pegasus and Abe Lincoln's Hat.  I included comprehension questions, character analysis, and vocabulary. This is in my store for only $2.50.

I am getting things ready for Read Across America Day on Monday. 

I made a listening activity for The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss. You can download it HERE for FREE.

 

My students will scan the QR code which will take them to video. (It was on Youtube but I put it through SafeShare.) If you don't have access to technology, you can still read the story and have your students fill out the worksheet.

Does you school have a big celebration on March 2nd? If you have any great ideas will you leave them in a comment for me? I am in charge of this day at our school and want to make it memorable!

I can't stop rhyming!!!

I love Seuss week but there is a major side effect....I can't. stop. rhyming!  Or at least thinking like the texts. Can you, can you stop me now? No I can't Ma'am, ask a cow. 

Today was also Crazy Hair Day so that added to the excitement! One of my former students had hair that looked Seuss-ish so she came down and showed it off to my class.

I also had Thing 1 in my room today. Funny enough, her twin is in my class too but he did not want to come as Thing 2!

We made green eggs and ham and then graphed if we liked it or not. Even simple things like making a graph is more of a challenge with 30 students. Since 24 didn't fit, even with super long paper, we decided to make it wobbily like a Seuss picture.

Here is a shot of the hats we made on rainbow hair. You can see our Horton writing and peek over on the bulletin board in the background. I didn't take a close-up since I already blogged about that project {here.}

The kids loved that all week our daily editing word problems had Seuss characters in them.

This year, instead of a notebook, my kids paste my daily editing on Cara's Calendar Companion and it has been terrific combo!

The picture is supposed to match the number sentence but this young man pointed out to me that he didn't need to draw all 15 Sneetches because, "I played Pot O' Gold yesterday and knowd to use near doubles. " Woo Hoo! I told him that was a good point and from now on if they could tell me the strategy they used instead and used labels like this I 'd be happy.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

We are going Seuss-crazy in my room and the kids are loving it!

Today we made hats to get us in the mood to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday.

Students took turns cooking green eggs and ham with some great mom helpers. The rest of the class worked on the contractions sheet I posted last week.

Then we ate!

Finally, we answered the question: Did You Like Green Eggs and Ham?
and made a pictograph, tally graph, and bar graph.

I also wanted to post how the Horton peek overs and writing came out. The kids did a great job.

Horton peek over and writing

I may need a Seuss intervention, I just can't. stop. creating. This came to me during my 7-hour car trip yesterday. It is a Horton peek over.

I scanned the pieces I made in for you so you don't have to waste time trying to recreate it. I know most of you didn't get the whole week off like I did. ;-) 

Elephant

I am going to use it with Horton Hatches the Egg. First, we will discuss what they think the quote Horton repeats means.

"I meant what I said
And I said what I meant....
An elephant's faifthful
One hundred per cent!"

I have two different ideas for writing prompts:
1. Name one example from the story in which Horton proves that he is faithful. OR
2. How can you show you are faithful? ex. Follow through when you say you will finish a chore, play with a friend, etc.

So, I left the writing paper with the quote but no directions so you can decide.
