The Writing Process

I finally got around to updating my Writing Process posters.
I included the traditional 5 steps: Prewrite, Draft, Revise, Edit, and Publish.

However, I also included the variations I use with my 1st graders.  For instance, I think Prewrite is a little confusing for 6 year olds so I broke it into the two parts of Think and Plan. I've found that many kids (and adults) brainstorm but skip the planning and just start writing.

I ask my class to read their story over with their whisper phones (I made them out of PVC.) The kids love to use them and it is a great way for them to realize they left out a word (or two or three...)
I also switched over from traditional editing marks to writing the capital in green crayon and the ending mark in red crayon. The color seemed to help them notice to make the change on their final draft better.
I have students sign up for conferences after they have tried to edit and revise on their own first. I thought I might try to use name magnets or clips on the posters this year.
The students LOVE to share but there is never enough time for everyone. Again, maybe 3 magnets or clips from this poster could be picked at random.

Do you stick with the original 5 or use a variation? Maybe a little mix and match?

Leave me a comment and I'll pick 1 winner tomorrow to email a set to. Your comment can be about this post, telling me you pinned this, that you are now following my TpT store, whatever you'd like.

I'm bummed today because one of our cats, Shadow, has been missing for 1 week now. This happened one other time and she did come home the 2nd week so I am trying to keep my hopes up that someone is taking care of her.

  4. I love these posters and I like how you simplified them for the little ones. When I taught fifth grade, we used a chart where students marked their progress with a writing project by placing their name by each step. It helped to keep them accountable. I haven't tried that with first graders yet. I bet they would enjoy it and it might be good motivation for reluctant writers. So sorry about your cat...I hope she returns home soon. Maybe she just needed a little vacation!

  8. I love the posters, especially how you broke up the prewrite process, which an be overwhelming for our young writers. I also like the visuals. I hope your cat comes home soon. I had a cat that went missing for almost a month. What a surprise it was to see him saunter home.

  9. These are perfect. I find myself buying so many of your things because we think alike! I have these ideas in my head, but I am not tech savvy like you so I just make anchor charts with markers. Thank you for sharing your ideas! I love the brainstorming one! My summer cart on TPT is filling up fast with your stuff!

I also pinned it on my Pinterest page.

  19. Your posters are as usual awesome and kid friendly! In the past first grade has invested in super expensive writing folders from Lakeshore. These kid friendly posters can be displayed and reviewed daily which makes writing so much easier. My cat did the same thing several years ago. He was gone for 3 weeks and I found was residing at the home of an elder couple who took him in and fed him. Cats...they are so independent.

  24. I love these posters! I agree that the 5 traditional steps can be a bit confusing. I teach 2nd grade and it confuses them also. These would be great to help me become a better teacher in writing. Great job!!

  28. We did not do an official "writer's workshop", but I am working that into scheduling this year, and I think these posters would be a great visual for the process (I like your add-ins much better than the original 5/6 steps). Thanks for sharing!

  39. Sometimes the simplest ideas are amazing. Breaking down prewriting? GENIUS. Red and green for editing? THANK YOU. I went OVER and OVER these details last year and my kiddos still seemed to have a hard time-- I can't wait to use the variation idea. So I'm totally adding this to my TpT cart (which is getting a little ridiculous at this moment) but crossing my fingers that I win it! :)
