At first, I thought that the Common Core wasn't that big a change from our California state standards. I figured, "Okay, so I lose coins and pick up a little fractions, no biggie." BUT, what I learned is there are some MAJOR SHIFTS in the WAY we are to teach and students are to learn.
I loved this video! So what does this mean? Clearly we need to focus on teaching our students how to be good thinkers and be able to sift through information and decide what to do with it. Isn't this opposite of how it is now? Don't students wait to be told the "right" way and then try to copy it exactly to get the correct answer? Isn't that sad? Is there only one right way? Wouldn't it be amazing to have a classroom full of students who think of their own, independent answers, feel comfortable and confident in explaining how they got there, and respect others points of view? Can you imagine how this would better our future workforce?
One of the major shifts in the Common Core standards is the emphasis on students explaining (orally and written) HOW they got their answer and providing evidence.
What will this look like? This means less filling in bubbles, and more free-response tests or PBAs (Performance Based Assessments.) It also means providing more opportunities for students to orally explain their thinking. This likely means more formative assessments, hence my idea to make checklists to keep myself on track.
As requested, I made a Kindergarten version of my Common Core Assessment Pack.

Thank you for all of your help in figuring out what the standards mean for us and for our kids. I have your packet in my cart!
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I have loved everything I've purchased or gotten free from you. We faithfully used the sight word stars with great success and my firsties beg to play Pet Shop. Thank you for quality products that help kids succeed.
Thanks for sharing the video. I had watched it before but it is one of the videos that makes you think a littlbe bit differently every time you watch it. My book club is reading the book, The Lottery by Patricia Wood about a young man with an IQ of 76 who wins the lottery. Along with that we are reading a young adult novel called Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper. It is about a 5th grade girl born with cerebral palsy and is unable to communicate at the beginning of her young life. I have already finished that one - SO GOOD!!!! We are really looking forward to talking about these 2 books together.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting about CC. Sometimes, it can be so overwhelming - you don't know where to start.

Thanks for sharing the video. I'm excited for Common Core but like you said it's going to mean a whole new way of teaching. But I do believe it's what is beset for our students.

I'm a little nervous about CCSS, especially since I'll be a first year teacher and everything will be new for me!

Thanks for sharing! Well I have had one year of common core under my belt...our state adopted them for kindergarten last year, 1st is this year. I can say we are all still learning and experimenting with it and just trying to figure it all out!

Thanks for sharing the Video. We will be starting CCSS next year! Pinned and shared!

Thanks for sharing all of your great ideas! It's nice to not always have to recreate the wheel, especially since we will all be on the same page! I've pinned and shared this great post!

Loved this video - really makes you think! It's sad to think that we are working so hard to prepare our students for the future, and it's still not good enough. Our master teachers shared a video with us that explained that the US was something like 23rd in Education. Sad. I'm glad the CCSS are here. Hopefully it will push us all - teachers, students & parents, to increase our value on education and our commitment to our future.

I so appreciate you took the time to do this checklist. That is exactly what I've been thinking I need (but I'm way too lazy to make my own). The intermediate teacher at my school found a website (that's expensive) that tracks student achievement and helps individualize instruction for the standards, but that seemed like much more than I needed. Thank you, thank you!!!
ReplyDeleteI just read the Tiger's Wife and it was great, very different than 50 Shades, but I was ready for some intellectual stimulation (as opposed to 50 Shades type stimulation). I also recommend Mudbound. It was a quick read, but really good.

I am really loving the rigor in common core but it is so hard {I think} to assess that! Checklists are a great way to get that started! I was thinking about making some for first grade {like you did} but I just haven't had time!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that I'm seeing the idea around!!! :)
Thanks for the CC info!!

Thanks for posting the video. It was very interesting seeing all of those things together. Thanks for offering a copy of your packet for free.

Wow..I have seen that video before but each time you view it you catch different things.
ReplyDeleteI am 62 years young and I am continually amazed at the things the way they "use to be". Talking to my grandchildren it is so fun to tell stories about when I was a little girl and how things have changed.
I still am a firm believer in the power of morals and values being taught by parents and teachers so that we are raising a group of young people that still value integrity and responsibility and have good Character. Aren’t you??
I like the new CC but my school was founded on that principle...we follow the Core Knowledge program..(they wrote the books "Everything Your Kindergartener (1st,2nd,3rd,4th,5th,6th,7th,8th) Should Know" They were on the bandwagon a long time ago to make learning universal in the USA...
“Anywho”, I am tickled pink that you wrote the CC Kindergarten Book..THANK-YOU.
Fondly, Barbara

Wow, an amazing video. Thanks for sharing. We started CCSS this past year. It has been a challenge making the change but I love the way that is more rigorous than what we previously used. Would love to have a copy of the CC for Kindergaraten.

Thanks for this pack. I have been thinking something like this would be great. I am really trying to do better with keeping track this year. Last year we were only responsible for math. This year we are all in. I have pinned this and look forward to using it.
ReplyDeleteThanks!

Thank you very much for working on a second grade version. I can't wait to see what you come up with. Thanks again, Diedra
ReplyDeleteLove the video. It really makes you think about how you teach and creating reflective thinkers. I like to think I already do this but I am so excited about all that is available to support this way of teaching!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the video and the information
