1st Grade Math Activities & Games

I don't know about you, but I have never been fully satisfied with any math curriculum and always supplement. Over the years, I have made activities that correlate to professional development books I have read or created games for my math centers on skills that needed more practice.

FREE Grinch Bang Game

 Unfortunately, I have the nickname Grinch in my family because I have been known to let the holiday rush get to me. Although it is a bummer that my house will not be filled with visiting family this pandemic year, perhaps a silver lining may be that I don't feel as overwhelmed.

Anyway, I saw an image of the Grinch and it reminded me that many years ago I made a bang game and shared it. I haven't met a class yet that doesn't enjoy bang games.  

I made doubles and doubles plus one cards but a blank set is also included if you want to change the skill.

If you haven't tried Boom cards yet, I highly recommend them. They are easy to assign for centers or distance learning The students get immediate feedback and you can see their results which is awesome to check understanding.

4th Grade Place Value Riddles

So I got the news it looks likely I am being switched to 4th grade for summer school. Not a huge deal since I taught it last summer but I thought I was teaching the younger ones. Oh well.

To switch gears, I made this new Boom Card deck with 400 cards to practice place-value to the millions. 
There are 4 riddles and every time they answer a question, a new letter in the answer is revealed. 

The skills included are:
1. Comparing using <,=>
2. Identifying the place value digit
3. Expanded form
4. Rounding 

For each correct answer, the student earns a letter to the riddle solution. 

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.A.2

Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. Compare two multi-digit numbers based on meanings of the digits in each place, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.

Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place.

Is anyone else teaching summer school? I miss having the whole summer off but now that I have 2 in college I can't afford to say no. I still get about 6 weeks off so it isn't too terrible.

PD read and a FREE math game

Do you do a professional development read every summer? We were just emailed to choose between one of these three, so if anyone has a recommendation, I'm all ears.

2. So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo
3. White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism by Robin J. DiAngelo.

I am feeling pretty exhausted from distance learning so I am not sure I can tackle these quite yet. But it got me thinking about previous summer reads I had enjoyed.

I remember Debbie Diller's Math Work Stations really helped me get my students to do a lot more math talk. I thought I'd repost this free Go Fish game in case you didn't follow me back them.

The cards looks like dominoes and the match is the double in number form.

Instead of simply asking for a 12, the students are told to use the math vocabulary of double. I included these reminder cards that the students can refer to if they forget.

Skip Counting by 5s, 10s, and 100s to 1000

One of the summer school classes I teach is math enrichment. Usually we play a lot of partner and group games but I am not sure what will be allowed with social distancing requirements. Boo!  So,  I am working on making more individual hands-on activities.

This Boom Card bundle practices Counting within 1000 by 5s, 10s, and 100s. This addresses CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.2 with a fun alien ice cream theme.

Boom Learning Comparing 3-Digit Numbers

I am teaching entering 3rd grade math this summer. Hopefully in person, but just in case I am getting things ready for a digital experience. We have iPads in class so I'll be ready either way.

This boom card set has 20 cards asking the student to compare two 3-digit numbers using greater than, less than, or equal signs. Every time they get a correct answer, they earn a scoop of ice cream for one of the friends. I think they will enjoy seeing the ice cream cones grow taller.

Friends of Ten Giveaway!

I am so excited to show you what I've been busy working on. It is called Friends of Ten and I made it with my friend Lindsay! We were working on math curriculum this summer and commenting that learning the parts of ten is a core math skill that needs more attention. We wanted to make sure the partners to ten were really cemented into their young minds so we wrote an original rhyming story with our own creative number characters!

1. We will read this book to the class. We are going to print, laminate and bind into a book that can be reread later but you could also project it if you prefer.

2. We also made half sheet flashcards with just the character. We will start by randomly putting the cards up with magnets and asking volunteers to come partner up the characters to make ten. The next day we will flash the cards and ask the students to call out who the friend of ten is.

3. The students love mini-books so we created one they could reread. Coloring the characters will help ingrain the partners, plus the last page asks them to match the friends up.

4. How about a fun game to continue the practice? In Birthday Bash the students pick a birthday hat to wear and become that character. The object of the game is for students to find their friend of ten. When they find their partner,  they both check in with the teacher. If correct, the students receive a small prize (candy, sticker) and then pick new birthday hats to continue playing.  When time is called, students will be excited to share how many "friendships" they were able to make. The labels are included in the download so all you have to buy is the birthday hats at the dollar store!

5. Finally, there is a cut and glue worksheet that can be used for assessment or simply more practice.
