We are in the middle of our map unit. The kids have a really hard time remembering which is the city, state, country, etc. Here is a visual project that might help from my awesome team member, Robi. First, I found our school on Google Earth and slowly zoomed out. Then we made this project.
Our School
Our Street
Our City
Our State {I gave them pictures of the state flower and bird so they could draw one}
Our Country
Our Continent
Our Planet {The templates were copied so the kids just cut and pasted.}
***Edited to add that I didn't share the templates because this idea was my friend Robi's not mine. However, after a zillion requests, we teamed up to put the directions for this project and the rest of our map unit into a 40 page packet. You can check it out {
here.}
I love this idea. This is very hard for my ELL students to grasp. I think I will try this with them later in the year. Thanks.

ReplyDeleteRikki,
ReplyDeleteThe largest oval is 10.5 inches, then they get smaller by an inch. :-)
A-dorable with a capital A!

It is a hard concept for first graders. I have a set of nesting boxes I use to teach how a house is in a street, which is in a city, etc.

ReplyDeleteHow fantastic is this!!
ReplyDeleteAlso how random. I am from San Jose, worked as the director for the YMCA Child Care Center on the Hacienda campus some 14 years ago. Loved that school and that area.

ReplyDeleteI love this - I want to link it on my facebook page for others to see if that's OK!
ReplyDeleteJenn--LOVE this and cannot wait to do it tomorrow w/ my kiddos. Hope it's okay that I'll link back to you on the circle template I created (made mine circles v ovals) and on my site when I write about it. Awesome!
ReplyDeleteI referred folks over here after writing about using Me on the Map as a Mentor Text for Writing. I'm hoping that is OK with you. I should have asked first. This activity is so cool!

I use nesting boxes for the Me on the Map Book! We have a little person cutout that "travels" to each box. When the firsties nest the boxes it really concrete the idea that their address is smaller than the world. :)
ReplyDeleteWOW! J'adore l'idée! C'est vraiment chouette! Je vais réaliser le projet avec mes jeunes c'est certain! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteLove the visual on this! How fun.
ReplyDeleteWhat a super visual. I am in Sunnyvale, and would love a copy of your templates. will you post them?
