The Chalk Box Kid

I have some really high readers this year that I want to keep challenged. I started Book Clubs for them. I pick a chapter book and introduce it on Monday. I assign a certain number of chapters to read and packet pages to complete before our Book Club meeting on Friday. Since they are only in 1st grade I check in with them briefly every day in between to see how they are doing.

  1. I have a twosome that are working on chapter books too. They haven't been doing pages such as these, just reading and answering verbal questions, however, I like the idea of having questions printed out that they have to work on each day...this unit is nicely designed! Thanks for sharing.

  2. Great idea and wonderful that you are differentiating for your high-level learners. Sometimes it seems like these students are forgotten. I work with a group of low-ability fourth graders and we read The Chalk Box Kid at the beginning of the year. They really enjoyed the book. Great job!

  6. I have a question for you about Chalk Box Kid. My students just finished it. I have had to tie in character traits, feelings and motivations as that is the standard we are teaching. They created a three column chart with that information on Ivy and Gregory. Looking for help for a culminating question I could ask them that would require them to use the chart as evidence. Any help would be appreciated.
