Report Cards, UGH!

Working on report cards. UGH! Anyone else? Here is one thing I do that helps.
Having all my assessments kept in one portable tub makes it easy to bring home.

As I do assessments, I file them in each student's folder.
Then when I go to fill in the report card I take out their file and of course have my gradebook.
What do you do to make report cards less painful? I'd love to get some comments today to relieve my report card grind... :-)

  1. I am a kindergarten teacher and I always hate doing report cards. I can't just take test scores, average them together, and get a grade like an upper-grade teacher can. For k it's all individual assessments. I always feel so rushed. Kids will be absent when I'm testing, etc. My tip is to start early!

  2. I'm not sure that there's anything that truly makes it less painful. We keep our grades on our computer (I record them in a binder as well) and we do our report cards online (it's part of the attendance software that our district uses) so it makes it a little faster. It's all standards based so I fill out a grid with +/- for all the standards and then I'm ready to go. For me, it's more about keeping up on the grading (especially of their writing).

  3. I love your tub idea! I use something similar, along with a binder that I use for conferencing. I use some of the strategies from the Daily 5 and Literacy CAFE. Snacks and sappy movies are a must for me! I finally, after 5 years of teaching first grade, made a bank of comments that correspond to our 4, 3, 2, 1 grading system for each area. We have a web-based system and it takes eons to do each RC because there are 7 separate comment sections, so if you spell check, the card has to load 14 times. Never mind editing, which is another 2-3 reloads per comment! Anyway, the bank of comments has help so much and I can customize them as needed. This year I went straight through each students card, instead doing each section. It definitely took a long, concentrated amount of time, but I didn't feel like I was working on report cards for weeks! Happy reporting! I am off to proofread!

  4. Great idea using the tub. Our report card window just opened last week two. I think I have until the end of the month though. I dislike assessments too. Thankfully I don't have to assess all content areas. Just Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening.

I keep my assessments in a binder. Each student has his/ her own divider tab & their assessments go in my binder so I can easily take it with me wherever I may to go.

  6. My report cards are done online also.
I have a section for comments that is pretty small, so I keep them pretty plain and simple.

  7. My report cards are online, so it is pretty simple to keep up with them as the weeks go by. Our comments are numbered and we just have to put the number in the comment section. We use to do bubble sheets, those were crazy! Good luck getting your report cards ready :)

  10. Just as I read the title of your blog I pulled out my assessments! Too funny. We do our report cards online but everything has to be scored first!!

  12. I usually run a copy of the previous report card. Then I use a colored pen - purple, to make notes, scores, comments as I assess. Then when I am working on the computer to enter info for their report card, I can see the last report and any new thoughts along with all the current assessments. This helps me since I can't see the entire report card while entering new info. Thanks for the tub idea too.

  13. I love the idea of an assessment tub! We use an online grading/attendance/report card program so my grades are on the computer and we print out averages of their scores for the report card. I do not agree with giving firsties a-f grades at all, but that is what I'm directed to do.
